Fischer, Moritz von
FISCHER, MORITZ VON
FISCHER, MORITZ VON (1800–1900), Hungarian porcelain manufacturer. Fischer's porcelain company in Herend, Hungarian, rendered distinguished service to the country's industry and art. He was compelled to struggle against innumerable difficulties before he succeeded in developing his small factory in 1839. Because of the company s skills and talent, it became a veritable art institute, comparing favorably with the established porcelain establishments such as those in Berlin and Meissen. The company was represented at a large number of international exhibitions, and invariably was awarded first prizes. In recognition of his services, Fischer's grandson, Eugène von Fischer, was raised to the nobility by Emperor Francis Joseph I in 1869.
