Tonghua

Tonghua or Tunghwa (both: tŏŏng´hwä´), city (1994 est. pop. 349,500), SW Jilin prov., China, in a mountainous region, and on a railroad to Korea. Abundant coal and iron reserves are in the area, and the city has iron- and steelworks. Machinery, electrical equipment, and paper products are also manufactured. The city was formerly the capital of Andong prov. and was part of Liaoning prov. from 1949 to 1954.
