pseudo-. False, counterfeit, pretended, or deceptively resembling something. Pseudodìpteral refers to a Classical building with the appearance of being a dipteral temple (with two rows of columns along the longer sides), but with no inner row, leaving a wide passage between cella and peristyle. Pseudo-Gothic is a pejorative term for C18 sham Gothic, and pseudo- is also applied to any style used falsely, e.g. pseudo-Georgian. Pseudoperipteral is applied to a Classical temple with the ‘peristyle’ engaged with the cell wall. Pseudoprostyle describes a prostyle temple without a pronaos, the portico colonnade set closer than an intercolumniation from or engaged with the cella wall behind. Pseudothyrum is a false or secret door.
