St Michael and St George, Order of
St Michael and St George, Order of. The order was founded by the prince regent in 1818 and is reserved mainly for diplomats. Originally it commemorated British rule over Malta and the Ionian Islands, but the scope has been widened. There are three classes—Knight Grand Cross, Knight Commander, and Companion, with the equivalent female rank of Dame. The order's chapel is in St Paul's.
