Kings Bridge, New York

KINGS BRIDGE, NEW YORK. The point at which the Post Road crossed Spuyten Duyvil Creek—which separated Manhattan from the Bronx—Kings Bridge was strategically important in the New York campaign and subsequently in the British defense of New York City. It was an objective of American forces under Major General Lincoln in the operations against Manhattan at the start of the Yorktown campaign in July 1781. The name is also variously spelled King's Bridge and Kingsbridge.
