Glenlivet, battle of, 1594. Throughout the 1580s and 1590s, the catholic lords in Scotland were in touch with Philip II of Spain about an invasion to restore catholicism. In October 1594 Huntly and Erroll joined forces and on the 3rd defeated at Glenlivet, south of Elgin, a larger royalist force led by the inexperienced Argyll. But the rebels did not pursue their victory, Spanish troops were not forthcoming, and they were forced into temporary exile.
