Dublin, treaty of

Dublin, treaty of, 1646. In the early months of 1646 Charles I's position, militarily and diplomatically, deteriorated sharply. On 28 March 1646 the Kilkenny Confederates reached an agreement in Dublin with Ormond, the lord-lieutenant. But when Ormond published the peace terms in July, they were repudiated by the Confederates as giving inadequate recognition to the catholic church. Ormond was accordingly forced to open negotiations with the English Parliament and in June 1647 a parliamentary army reached Dublin. Ormond left for England in July.
