Byron, John, 1st Baron Byron (1599–1652). A royalist commander in the Civil War, Byron was one of seven brothers who fought for the king. He was in action as a cavalry commander at Edgehill, Roundway Down, the first battle of Newbury, and at Marston Moor. Defeated at Nantwich in January 1644, Byron managed to hold Chester for the king until February 1646. He then retired to Caernarfon castle, which he surrendered in June 1646. The rest of his life was spent in exile.
