Cardinal, Douglas Joseph
Cardinal, Douglas Joseph (1934– ). Canadian architect partly of Native American descent. He was responsible for St Mary's Church, Red Deer, Alberta (1965–8), which has monumental curved forms set in the flat landscape. His works include Grande Prairie Regional College, Alberta (1972–6), the Alberta Government Services Building, Ponoka (1977), the St Albert Civic and Cultural Centre, Alberta (1983), and the Diamond Jenness School, Hay River, North-West Territories. Between 1983 and 1989 he designed the Canadian Museum of Civilization, Hull, Québec. His powerful curved forms, influenced by Le Corbusier's Ronchamp Chapel, have led to his work being described as ‘Prairie Expressionism’ in style.
