GUYANA. A country of the Caribbean coast of South America and member of the
COMMONWEALTH. Languages: English (official), English Creole, Bhojpuri, Hindi, Urdu, Amerindian languages. The region was sighted by Columbus in 1498 and settled by the Dutch in the 16c. The Dutch colonies of Essequibo, Demerara, and Berbice were ceded to the British in 1815, and consolidated as
British Guiana in 1831, with independence in 1966. The term
Guyanese English is used, in opposition to
Creolese or
Guyanese Creole English, to refer to educated local usage. Its vocabulary contains items from
DUTCH (
paal boundary mark,
stelling wharf), Amerindian (
warishi basket for heavy loads,
mashramani celebration after cooperative work), and Indian languages (
sardar field supervisor on a plantation,
dhan rice paddy). See
