unemployment
unemployment Inability of workers who are ready, able and willing to work to find employment. Unemployment is usually expressed as a percentage of the labour force.
Cyclical unemployment exists when the level of aggregate demand in the economy is less than that required to maintain full employment. People are laid off, and their jobs simply disappear.
Structural unemployment exists when jobs are available and workers are seeking jobs, but they cannot fill vacancies for some reason (for example, they lack proper training or live too far away).
Technological unemployment exists when workers are replaced by machines faster than they can find alternative employment.
Seasonal unemployment occurs when workers are unable to find jobs at certain seasons of the year. Such workers are usually engaged in construction, agriculture, or the tourist industry.
Underemployment is inefficient use of labour (for example, an employer may keep unneeded workers on the payroll when demand falls in order to have experienced help available when demand increases).
