Harry S Truman
Truman, Harry S.
Truman, Harry S. (1884–1972) 33rd US President (1945–53). He was elected to the Senate in 1934. In 1944, he was Franklin D.
Roosevelt's running mate. Truman became president on Roosevelt's death and faced many difficulties abroad. He approved the use of the atomic bomb to force Japanese surrender (1945) at the end of
World War 2, and adopted a robust policy toward the Soviet Union during the
Cold War. Truman approved the
Marshall Plan (1947) and the creation (1949) of the
North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Lacking Roosevelt's charisma, he was expected to lose the election of 1948, but won narrowly. In the
Korean War (1950–53), he was forced to dismiss the US commander, General
MacArthur. Truman declined renomination in 1952. Dwight D.
Eisenhower succeeded him.
