Romanticism
Romanticism Period of music history lasting from
c.1800–1910. It is characterized by the importance given to emotional expression and imagination, in contrast to the restraint and strict forms of the
Classical era. Orchestras expanded as composers experimented with unusual and colourful orchestration to express extra-musical influences. Leading romantic composers include
Wagner,
Berlioz,
Mendelssohn,
Schumann,
Chopin and
Liszt.
