Rajput
Rajput Predominantly Hindi warrior caste from
nw India. They became powerful in the 7th century
ad, gaining control of an historic region named Rajputana. They retained their independence despite the Muslim conquests in the 12th century, but by the early 17th century had submitted to the
Mogul Empire. In the early 18th century, they extended their control. In the 19th century, they lost most of their territorial gains to the Marathas, Sikhs, and the British Empire. During the colonial period, much of Rajputana retained its independence under local princely rule. After Indian independence in 1947 most of the princes lost their powers. See also
