Gainsborough, Thomas
Gainsborough, Thomas (1727–88) English portrait and landscape painter. Influenced by the Dutch landscape painters, he developed a style remarkable for its characterization and use of colour. His portraits, such as
Viscount Kilmorey (1768) and
Blue Boy (
c.1770), rivalled those of Sir Joshua
Reynolds. Among his best landscapes is
The Watering Place (1777).
