antigen A molecule, normally of a protein although sometimes of a polysaccharide, usually found on the surface of a cell in an animal, whose shape causes the production in the invaded organism of antibodies that will bind specifically to the antigen. The reaction is so highly specific that it can be used in the identification of viruses and to distinguish between proteins extracted from different plant species.
