Thomson, Charles Wyville

Thomson, Charles Wyville (1830–82) An Irish naturalist, Thomson became professor of natural science at Edinburgh. He was especially interested in life in the deep oceans, which led him to propose an expedition to make detailed studies of the ocean. The result was the Challenger expedition, at the end of which Thomson began the arrangement of the collections and publications of the results.
