Fiji. The republic of Fiji is a group of small islands in the Pacific, 1,000 miles north of New Zealand. They were first explored by Tasman in the 17th cent. but there was little regular contact until the 19th cent. when traders and missionaries arrived. The islands were declared a British colony in 1874 but granted independence in 1970, within the Commonwealth and with a governor-general. In 1987, after coups, Fiji was declared a republic and withdrew from the Commonwealth, rejoining in 1997. Growing tension between the native Fijians and immigrant Indians led to another coup in 2000, during which its membership was suspended. The capital is Suva, and the principal exports are sugar, coconuts, ginger, and copra.
