Kartārpur

Kartārpur (Pañjābī, ‘abode of the Creator’). Name of two historic Sikh sites.1 Town founded by Gurū Nānak in 16th cent. CE. Kartārpur lies on the Rāvī river in Siālkoṭ district, Pakistan, 3 km. from Dehrā Bābā Nānak on the Indian bank. Nānak died in Kartārpur, but his samādhī (tomb) was moved to Dehrā Bābā Nānak in the 17th cent. A gurdwārā was built 1911–12.2 Town founded by Gurū Arjan Dev. Arjan founded Kartārpur in the Jalandhar (Jullundur) Doāb, Pañjāb at the end of the 16th cent. CE. The original copy of the Ādi Granth, compiled by Gurū Arjan Dev, is housed in a gurdwārā called Śīś Mahal in Kartārpur. Thousands flock to Kartārpur for Baisākhī and on every Amāvas (darkest night of the month).
