Spanish Colonial Revival. Variant of Ameri can
Colonial Revival which drew on exem plars from the former Spanish colonies (e.g. the Governor's Palace, Santa Fé, NM (1610–14), constructed largely of
adobe). It is distinguished from
Mission Revival by elaborate balcony-rails, carved or cast ornament, Classically-derived columns, and window-grilles, all elements found in Spanish Colonial architecture in Mexico. The Revival became popular after the Panama-California Exposition, San Diego, CA (1915): one of its most successful protagonists was George Washington Smith (1876–1930), e.g. the Sherwood House, La Jolla, CA (1925–8), Steedman House, Montecito, CA (1922–5), and Maverick House, San Antonio, TX (1927–9).
