HAWES, Gene R(obert) 1922-2004

OBITUARY NOTICE— See index for CA sketch: Born May 14, 1922, in Chicago, IL; died of heart failure September 4, 2004, in Chappaqua, NY. Consultant and author. Hawes was the author of books about education, parenting, careers, and alcohol addiction, including a series of popular eponymous education guides. After receiving his A.B. from Columbia University in 1949, he worked as an editor of the Columbia Alumni News from 1951 to 1955. This was followed by five years as editor for the College Entrance Examination Board in New York City. While there, Hawes published his first edition of The New American Guide to Colleges (1959), which was revised through four editions. Many more books advising readers on study skills for college, how to find a good college, how to finance an education, and how to start a good career followed. Among these are Hawes Comprehensive Guide to Colleges (1978), Hawes Guide to Successful Study Skills (1981), Hawes on Getting into College (1983), and The Career Changer's Source Book (1985). During the early 1960s, Hawes was director of information for the education publisher Science Research Associates, and from 1962 to 1968 he was a consultant to Columbia University and editor of Columbia Research News. Afterwards, he became a full-time freelance author. Some of his more recent works discussed subjects other than college and careers and include Childbearing: A Book of Choices (1987), Rx for Recovery: The Medical and Health Guide for Alcoholics, Addicts, and Their Families (1989), and Addiction Free: How to Help an Alcoholic or Addict Get Started on Recovery (2000), the last written with Anderson Hawes. His later work also included consulting for organizations and companies such as IBM, the Starr Foundation, and McKinsey and Company.
