SIDELIGHTS: Stewart R. Craggs told CA: "My primary motivation for writing and compiling these kinds of books is a great love of nineteenth- and twentieth-century English music and the work of the particular composers I have chosen over the last twenty years. My work on Sir William Walton, however, extends further back than that to the middle 1950s and onwards. I can, therefore, say that Walton (in particular) and the other composers have greatly influenced and inspired me and my work.

"As you can imagine, it involves a great deal of research, much of it done in London, and working either with people connected with each composer or with the composers themselves; for example: Lady Walton, Lady Bliss, Lady Berkeley, Dr. Rachel O'Higgins (Alan Bush's daughter), Professor Alun Hoddinott, Sir Malcolm Arnold, and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, together with Mrs. Judy Arnold, Max's manager."
