SIDELIGHTS: In La hacienda publica y la politica economica, 1929-1958 economist Enrique Cardenas provides a history of the Mexican economy from the time of the Great Depression though 1958. Americas contributor Barbara A. Tenenbaum concluded "We can only hope Rector Cardenas will take some time out from his administrative duties to write the thrilling sequel to this excellent contribution."

In An Economic History of Twentieth-Century Latin America Cardenas and his coeditors provide an economic history of Latin America. Volume one covers the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, volume two covers the 1930s, and volume three covers the period after World War II. "These three volumes are extremely well written, relatively comprehensive, and analytically challenging," noted J. L. Dietz in a Choice review.
