Paulli, Holger Simon

Paulli, Holger Simon , Danish violinist, conductor, and composer; b. Copenhagen, Feb. 22, 1810; d. there, Dec. 23, 1891. He studied violin with Schall and Wexschall, and at the age of 12, entered the court orch. in Copenhagen, where he was later its concertmaster (1849–63) and principal conductor (1863–83). In 1866 he was appointed co-director, with Gade and Hauptmann, of the newly founded Copenhagen Cons. He was an admirer of Wagner, and conducted the first performances in Denmark of Lohengrin (1870) and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (1872). He composed a Singspiel, Lodsen (The Pilot), which was produced in Copenhagen on Sept. 25, 1851. Other works include some ballet music, violin pieces, and songs.
