He joined Weather Report in 1976; he played with them for several years and developed an international following for his playing and for writing such pieces as “Teen Town” and “Punk Jazz.” He then toured with his own group Word of Mouth from (1980–83), recording in 1984. At one point, he was interested in playing acoustic bass and asked George Mraz for lessons. Pastorius suffered from depression and endured several financial setbacks. He was assaulted by a club manager in Fort Lauderdale and hospitalized in a coma for nine days before he died.
