Nicholson, (Sir) Sydney (Hugo) (b London, 1875; d Ashford, Kent, 1947). Eng. organist and composer. Org., Carlisle Cath. 1904–8, Manchester Cath. 1908–18, Westminster Abbey 1918–27. Founder-dir. Sch. of Eng. Church Mus., 1927, which became Royal School of Church Music 1945. Wrote church mus. and org. pieces. Ed. 1916 supplement to Hymns Ancient and Modern. Knighted 1938.
