Hamilton, David (Peter)
Hamilton, David (Peter), American music critic; b. N.Y., Jan. 18, 1935. He was educated at Princeton Univ. (1952-56; A.B., 1956; M.F.A., music history, 1960). He was music and record librarian there (1961–65). In 1965 he became asst. music ed. of W.W. Norton & Co. in N.Y., and was music ed. from 1968 to 1974. In 1967 he became a contributing ed. of High Fidelity, and in 1968, music critic of the Nation. He also served as N.Y. music correspondent for the Financial Times of London (1969–74) and assoc. ed. of the Musical Newsletter (1971–77). He wrote The Listener’s Guide to Great Instrumentalists (N.Y., 1981) and The Metropolitan Opera Encyclopedia: A Comprehensive Guide to the World of Opera (N.Y, 1987), and also publ. The Music Game: An Autobiography (London, 1986).
