Zero Effect ★★½ 1997 (R)

A cross between Howard Hughes and Sherlock Holmes, brilliant, eccentric detective Daryl Zero (Pullman), who, along with his harried helper Steve Arlo (Stiller), takes on the case of a blackmailed timber tycoon (O'Neal) in this comedic whodunit. The normally reclusive sleuth bites the bullet and agrees to trek to Oregon to personally investigate the particularly intriguing case, which also involves an attractive paramedic (Dickens). Pullman pulls off another quirky leading man performance with flair. Stiller is stellar as the exasperated assistant. Fresh idea and hip humor mark this debut for 22-year-old writer/director Kasdan, son of director Lawrence Kasdan. 150m/C VHS, DVD . Bill Pullman, Ben Stiller, Ryan O'Neal, Kim Dickens, Angela Featherstone; D: Jake Kasdan; W: Jake Kasdan; C: Bill Pope.
