Charley's Aunt ★★★ 1941

Benny's at his comedic best in this amusing farce. Lord Fancourt “Babbs” Babberly (Benny) and his Oxford roommates Jack Chesney (Ellison) and Charley Wyckeham (Haydn in his film debut) must find a proper escort so their lady friends (Whelan, Baxter) will agree to visit. Babbs dons drag to impersonate Charley's maiden aunt (from Brazil—where the nuts come from) but finds himself fending off the romantic overtures of a couple of codgers (Cregar, Gwenn). Based on the play by Brandon Thomas. 80m/B VHS . Jack Benny, Kay Francis, James Ellison, Richard Haydn, Arleen Whelan, Anne Baxter, Laird Cregar, Edmund Gwenn, Reginald Owen; D: Archie Mayo; W: George Seaton; C: J. Peverell Marley; M: Alfred Newman.
