Richard Pococke
Richard Pococke
1704-1765
English bishop and explorer known for his A Description of the East, and Some Other Countries (1743, 1754). In this two-volume work Pococke produced systematic and complete descriptions of many archaeological sites he visited during his travels in Egypt and the Middle East, including the pyramids at Giza, Sakkara, and Dashur. His work grew in significance because many of the monuments he described were destroyed before the Napoleonic expedition of 1798.
