Joseph of Gamala
JOSEPH OF GAMALA
JOSEPH OF GAMALA , Jewish patriot leader in the Jewish War (66–70/73 c.e.). Together with Chares, he organized the defense of Gamala when it was besieged by Vespasian in 67 c.e. The Romans were decisively repulsed in their first attack. The town fell, as a consequence of severe famine and lack of water, after a siege lasting nearly a month. Joseph was killed when trying to cut his way through the Roman ranks.
