Nelson Mandela Bay
Nelson Mandela Bay, metropolitan municipality (2011 pop. 1,152,115), Eastern Cape prov., S South Africa, on Algoa Bay, an inlet of the Indian Ocean. Port Elizabeth is the municipal seat; other communities include Ibhayi, Bethelsdorp, Motherwell, Kwanobuhle, Uitenhage, and Despatch. The municipality was formed in 2001. An industrial and railroad center, it has motor vehicle assembly plants and other manufacturing. The area is a popular tourist destination; Port Elizabeth is a major seaport.
