Havlíček, Josef
Havlíček, Josef (1899–1961). Czechoslovak avant-garde architect who vigorously promoted the ideas of CIAM and Le Corbusier. With Karel Honzík (1900–66) he designed the International Modernist Ministry of Pensions, Prague (1926–35). His proposal (1950s), in line with CIAM orthodoxy, to demolish the New Town, Prague, replacing it with pyramidal skyscrapers, mercifully was not realized. His apartment-block, Prague-Letná (1937–8), was probably his most elegant design. Other works include a sanatorium at Podébrady (1936–40), and two apartment blocks in Prague (1937–8).
