Tufts, John, American minister and pioneer compiler of church music; b. Medford, Mass., Feb. 26,1689; d. Amesbury, Mass., Aug. 17, 1750. He graduated from Harvard Univ. in 1708. He was ordained a minister at Newbury, Mass., in 1714, where he then served at the Second Church until 1738; then settled in Amesbury as a shopkeeper. In 1721 he publ. in Boston A Very Plain and Easy Introduction to the Art of Singing Psalm Tunes;in this book, letters instead of notes were used on the staff; it was very popular (at least 11 eds. publ. up to 1774; reprint of the 5thed. of 1726, Philadelphia, 1954).
