Ghent, Emmanuel (Robert)
Ghent, Emmanuel (Robert), Canadian-born American composer; b. Montreal, May 15, 1925. He studied medicine at McGill Univ. in Montreal (B.S., 1946; M.D., 1950), where he also received instruction in piano and bassoon. In 1951 he settled in the U.S. and completed his training in music with Shapey. In 1967 he held a Guggenheim fellowship. From 1969 he was active at the Bell Telephone Laboratories, where he prepared computer-generated works. His other works include mixed media scores and tape pieces. He also invented electronic devices capable of transmitting synchronization signals to musicians.
