Karl Crede
1819-1892
German physician known for his work in gynecology. He developed a method of expelling the placenta by pressing the thumb downward in pressure on the uterus through the abdominal wall. This maneuver, applied in the direction of the birth canal, is called Crede's method. Also, he developed a method for removing urine through a flaccid bladder, one without muscle tone. However, his best known contribution is the application of 1% silver nitrate into the eyes of newborns to prevent blindness in the baby if the mother had gonorrhea.
