Alfred of Sareshel or Shareshill
Alfred of Sareshel or Shareshill
fl. 1215
English medieval scholar (also known as Alfredus Anglicus) who was one of the earlier medieval European translators of Arabic commentaries on Aristotle's scientific works into Latin. These were fundamental to initial European commentaries that followed Latin translations of Aristotle's original works. Alfred provided a Latin translation and expansion of Ibn Sina's (Avicenna; 980-1037) commentary on Aristotle's fourth book of his Meteorologica and went on to provide the first European commentary (though of a summary nature) on the Meteorologica (about 1215).
