Maria Legio
Maria Legio or Legio Maria. The largest independent church with Roman Catholic origins in Africa. It arose in Kenya from a heavenly visit experienced in 1962 by a Luo farmer and Roman Catholic catechist, Simeon Ondeto. In 1963, he was joined by a 20-year-old Roman Catholic Luo woman, Gaudencia Aoko after an experience of death and resurrection. Called at first ‘Legion of Mary’, it grew rapidly to over 50,000 members, with several thousands more among Luo migrants in Uganda and Tanzania.
