Corot, (Jean-Baptiste) Camille
Corot, (Jean-Baptiste) Camille (1796–1875) French painter, a leading 19th-century landscapist. He had more sympathy for the French classical tradition than for the attitudes of the Barbizon school, but was more natural than most classicists. After 1827, he gained success at the Paris Salon with more traditionally romantic paintings executed in a soft-edged style, unlike the precisely observed scenes of his earlier work. He was an important influence on Paul Cézanne and post-impressionism in general.
