During the 1960s and 1970s, Marjorie Nelson, also known as "Midge," became one of Australia's greatest softball players. Her 18-year career began in 1960 and included a record four World Series appearances with the Australia team, in 1965, 1970, 1974, and 1978. Nelson's incredible talent was a major contribution to Australia's World Series victory in 1965, and she also captained the teams for the 1974 and 1978 series. She set another record by playing in 23 consecutive national title games, mostly with the Victoria team. Her career batting average was. 205 with a fielding average of. 944. Nelson retired in 1978, the same year that she was awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) in recognition of her services to softball. She was inducted into the International Hall of Fame in 1983. In 1985, she was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, and the Midge Nelson medal was created to honor the most valuable player in the Australian national championships.
