Tlali, Miriam (1933–)
South African novelist and short-story writer. Born 1933 in Doornfontein, Transvaal, South Africa.
First black woman to publish novel in English in South Africa; championed woman writers and served on board of Skotaville Press; worked as editor of women's literary magazine Straight Ahead International; later works focus on experiences of black women in a racist, sexist society; works include Muriel at Metropolitan (1975), Amandla (1981), Mihloti (1984), and Footprints in the Quag: Stories and Dialogues from Soweto (1989); co-founded Staffrider magazine for which she wrote a regular column.
