American jazz singer and pianist. Born Genevieve Lillian Hering, Aug 5, 1926, in Hering's Mill, Royal, Nebraska; died Aug 4, 1991, in Los Angeles, CA; children: Kathy King.
Silky-voiced singer, called the Greta Garbo of jazz, had such hit singles as "You Better Go Now" (1951), "Joey" (1954), and "When I Fall in Love"; albums include The Very Thought of You, Southern Breeze and Jeri Southern Meets Cole Porter; sang title song for film Fire Down Below (1957); quit performing to teach (1965).
