New Zealand nurse, midwife, and hospital matron. Name variations: Jane Norgate. Born Jane Norgate, May 30, 1839, in Norfolk, England; died Dec 12, 1926, at Reefton, New Zealand; dau. of Henry Norgate (agricultural laborer) and Jane (Lidle) Norgate; m. Mr. O'Brien, c. 1868; m. David Ogilvy Preshaw (hospital chemist), 1879 (died 1903); children: 1 daughter.

Immigrated to Australia (1856); worked as servant before securing a position as domestic midwife and nurse in Melbourne; sailed for New Zealand with daughter (c. 1868); continued work as midwife and nurse until her appointment as matron of cottage hospital at Reefton (1876–1901).
