Brachiopods specialist (a marine invertebrates phylum), researched brachiopods in Middle and Upper Paleozoic rocks; at the British Museum, worked as a part-time curator (1919), assistant (1920–55) and deputy keeper (1955–65); with Dr. G.A. Cooper of Smithsonian Institution, wrote Morphology, Classification and Life Habits of the Productoidea (Brachiopoda) in 1960; received Geological Society's Lyell Medal (1958).
