Won 3 gold medals and 1 silver at European championships (1934); at age 17, won gold medals for the 100-meter freestyle at 1:05.9, 400-meter free-style at 5:26.4, and 4×100-meter freestyle relay as well as a silver medal for the 100-meter backstroke at Berlin Olympics (1936). Inducted into International Swimming Hall of Fame (1968).
