Was a dominant force in the long jump throughout career; at World championships, won a gold for long jump (1983, 1993); at European championships, won a gold for long jump (1986, 1990, 1994, 1998) and 200 meters (1986); won a silver medal for long jump at Seoul Olympics (1988), along with bronze medals for the 200 meters and 100 meters; won a gold medal at Barcelona Olympics (1992) and a gold medal at Sydney Olympics (2000), both for long jump.
