American novelist and poet. Born 1939 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Jewish parents; Barnard College, BA, 1960; Brandeis University, MA in literature, 1962; m. Marvin Hoffman (psychologist); children: Adina (b. 1967); Elana (b. 1970).
Taught Creative Writing at Goddard College, University of Houston, and School of the Art Institute of Chicago; writings include Some Deaths in the Delta (1970), Street Games (1974), The Autobiography of My Mother (1976), Tender Mercies (1978), Civil Wars (1984), Before and After (1992) and Cora Fry's Pillow Book (1994).
