bowling
bowling Indoor sport in which a ball is bowled at pins. An ancient game, it originated in Germany and was brought to the USA by Dutch immigrants in the 17th century. Known as ninepins, it soon became a popular gambling game and, when it was banned, a tenth pin was added to circumvent the law. Ten-pin bowling is now an extremely popular sport. Two players or teams bowl at pins set on a triangular base. Points are scored according to the number of pins knocked over.
