anemometer
anemometer, an instrument used to measure the velocity of the wind. It consists of a number of wind-driven cups connected to a vertical spindle which, as it rotates, moves a pointer on a scale marked in knots or miles an hour. In another type of anemometer, known as a ventimeter, the wind enters the bottom of a glass cylinder and pushes a disc up a vertical rod against the force of gravity, the wind strengths being marked up the side of the cylinder and indicated by the height reached by the disc.

anemometer An instrument for measuring the speed of flow in a fluid. Meteorological anemometers measure wind speed. Most do so either from the rotation of a wind-driven turbine (‘rotating cups anemometer’) or from the wind pressure through a tube aligned by a vane to point into the wind (‘pressure-tube anemometer’).
