Zechariah, book of
Zechariah, book of The penultimate book of the OT. Chs. 1–8 are the work of Zechariah, son of Iddo (according to Ezra 5: 1; grandson according to Zech. 1: 1), and describe the harsh conditions of life in Judah after the Return from Exile. He followed Haggai in urging the rebuilding of the Temple (about 518 bce). There are eight visions in these chapters, linked by the theme of the consecration of Joshua as high priest. The land is to be cleansed of all who do not observe the Law and the visions promise God's continuing protection of Jerusalem.
The remaining chapters of Zech. (and Mal.) were added in the 5th and 4th cents. bce and the authors seem dissatisfied with the nation's leadership in their time and use their visions of an apocalyptic character to express hopes that in the end there will be a final vindication for the nation. Gentiles too will be included in this act of salvation (Zech. 14: 16). Chs 9–14 are complementary to the first eight chs, for the book is an editorial unity: the ‘eye’ motif occurs in both parts. But the ‘Day of the Lord’ is conceived in cosmic terms, with liturgical anticipations at the annual festival of Booths (14: 16). |

Zechariah
Zechariah A common name in the Bible (Zacharias in AV). (1) The son of Jehoiada, stoned by the populace (2 Chron. 24: 20–3) and probably referred to in Matt. 23: 35. (2) The Minor Prophet after the Exile (Zech. 1: 1–7). (3) The father of John the Baptist the Baptist (Luke 1: 5) to whom an angel appeared to announce the forthcoming birth to his wife Elizabeth. When he asked for a confirmatory sign he was struck dumb—until the child was born, when he then blessed God and spoke of the hope for a Messiah for whom John would prepare the way (Luke 1: 76). (4) Son of Baris, murdered by Zealots shortly before the fall of Jerusalem in 70 ce according to Josephus.
Matt. 23: 35 is mistaken in regarding Zechariah (1, above) as ‘son of Barachiah’: possibly this was an attempt to harmonize the reference with Zech. 1: 1 or even also with Isa. 8: 2. Zechariah (4, above) would have been an anachronism on the lips of Jesus, but it is not impossible that recollection of this recent case of innocently shed blood was an influence on Matt. |

Zechariah
Zechariah (Zachariah) Any of several biblical personalities. One of the most significant was a Jewish prophet of the late 6th century bc. He prophesied the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem by the Jews who had returned from exile in Babylon. In the Book of Zechariah, the 11th book of the 12 minor prophets of the Old Testament, he described visions of four horsemen patrolling God's world, four horns symbolizing the destruction of Israel's enemies, and six other night visions prefiguring the coming of God in judgment. Many of Zechariah's images were taken up in the Revelation of St John the Divine. The other important Zechariah was the priest mentioned in the Gospel According to St Luke as the father of Saint John the Baptist. In the New Testament account (Luke 1), Zechariah was visited by the angel Gabriel, who foretold the birth of John to Zechariah's wife Elizabeth. For doubting Gabriel's prophecy, Zechariah was struck dumb until the time of John's circumcision.

Zechariah
Zechariah , prophetic book of the Bible, which dates from 520 BC-518 BC at Jerusalem. The prophet was associated with Haggai in a movement to restore the Temple. The book, after an introduction, proceeds with eight visions, prophetic of the restitution of Israel, and a symbolic crowning of the high priest. An address follows on the observance of the commandments and the rewards for doing so. The remainder of Zechariah, very different in tone, consists of prophecies concerning trouble and threat from invading armies and the eventual redemption of Jerusalem. Scholars date this section to a later period (4th or 3d cent. BC).

Zechariah, Book of
Zechariah, Book of. Minor Prophet. Chs. 1–8, deriving mainly from Zechariah himself, date from 519–517 BC. An introductory prophecy is followed by eight visions. In one of these (4:1–14) Zerubbabel, the contemporary head of the royal house of Judah, is exhorted to complete the restoration of the Temple and is perhaps identified with the Davidic prince (see MESSIAH). In chs. 7–8 Zechariah asserts the need for righteousness rather than fasting, and prophesies the future glory of Judah when the Gentiles seeking God should voluntarily join themselves to the Jews. Chs. 9–14 contain two anonymous prophecies reflecting the circumstances of a later age.

Zechariah
Zechariah ♂ Name (meaning ‘God has remembered’ in Hebrew) of several figures in the Bible, most notably one of the twelve ‘minor’ prophets, author of the book that bears his name. It was also the name of an earlier prophet, who was stoned by the people because of his preaching (2 Chronicles 24:20–23), and the last Israelite king of the race of Jehu, who was overthrown by Shallum the son of Jabesh (2 Kings 15:8–10). It is one of a number of Old Testament names that has enjoyed a modest revival in recent years. See also Zachary.
